One
of the star exhibits at the 2004 CEBIT Show was the
Immersive Meeting Point 3D video conferencing system
demonstrated by the Heinrich-Hertz-Institute
Immersive
Meeting Point (im.point) is being touted as “next
generation videoconference system” in that the conference
table is seamlessly integrated into the virtual conference
scene and the remote participants are shown on high
resolution life-sized displays with the same perspective as
if they were in the room.
The
natural and life sized 3D representation of the virtual
scene and the remote participants is designed to give the
impression of a real face-to-face meeting.
im.point
uses the latest MPEG-4 video coding technology in real-time
to make it possible to communicate with geographically
distributed participants in a virtual conference room
without any difference to real meetings.
Though
only in concept form at this point in time, it is hoped that
im.point will increase the usability and hence acceptance of
future videoconference systems substantially.
